Side tables and sapphirewings

Not long after I posted my column last week, I heard from my new friend Glenn Bartley, who assured me he had enough photos of his side table build to document the project for our magazine. In my column I mentioned how images are so important to a woodworking magazine like CW&HI. Dark, out-of-focus photos that don’t clearly show a step to our readers are of no help to anyone, and are enough to make even the most hardened editor tear up. Glenn has travelled the world photographing birds, so I’m sure his skills are more than up to capturing images of raw wood being turned into a piece of furniture.

It’s all about the punctuation…I mean, the projects

I enjoy my job. Editing a magazine can mean different things for different publications, but my job essentially involves deciding who will write an article, planning when those articles will run, and then ensuring each article is complete, makes sense, involves safe practices and has the proper photography and illustrations to run with it. From time to time I also source tools or machinery that appear in the articles, whether for individual tool reviews or tool comparison articles.

Kids making Christmas presents

Rather than spend our hard-earned money, I thought this year some Christmas gifts would be best made by hand. My kids’ hands, more accurately. Nothing says “Merry Christmas” like a gift made by a child.

Make a veneer-cutting jig

Veneer is a great material to incorporate into a project, but it’s not machined in the same way solid wood is. This jig will allow you to trim veneer edges straight so they can be joined and pressed onto a substrate.

New year – new blog

Let’s start this year off a bit differently, as the last one didn’t work out quite how we were all hoping! Here we are at the beginning of a new year, and the beginning of this brand-new column I’ll be sharing with you each week. There have been a lot of little woodworking and home improvement topics I’ve never been able to write about, as there was never enough space in the magazine for them.

Visions in Wood 2020

Generally, every two years, the Vancouver Island Woodworkers’ Guild mounts a show of works created by its 150 members. Their most recent show was a challenge, as COVID-19 forced them to take a different approach and put on a virtual show.

Top 10 underrated tools – part 1

Some tools do a lot, and we all know it. Others do a lot, but I sometimes get the sense that some woodworkers don't know it. Here’s a list of what one woodworker thinks many other woodworkers could benefit from having in their workshop.
