Excellent suction power, intuitive suction touch control and an automatic tool activated power-on feature make this an excellent choice for the small workshop.

It feels like a constant battle in the shop when it comes to dust. I work in a basement where I need to be mindful of a furnace and all the dust it can pull in. In my early woodworking days I created so much dust it clogged the filter on my furnace and required a service call from a technician. Since then I’ve been very mindful of dust collection.

Dust collector, air cleaner, shop vac and a downdraught table – I feel like I’ve tried everything. Each works to a point, but nothing is ever perfect. However, after using the FESTOOL CLEANTEC CT 15 E HEPA, I feel like I’ve found something close.

When used in tandem with the FESTOOL ETS 125 random orbit sander the suction is extremely strong. I kept envisioning that old shopping channel demonstration where the vacuum picks up the bowling ball when using the two together. While not quite at that level the sander would grab hold of the piece I was working on. And, there were virtually no noticeable errant dust particles as I worked through the various grits.

Used as a vacuum around the shop in combination with the FESTOOL Cleaning Set I was able to clean up the dust and debris on the floor and shelves with ease. Even larger pieces like shavings and small cut offs disappeared quickly. Keep in mind, the hose diameter is 27/32” so it’s certainly not meant for large shavings or big pieces, but for the fine dust it performs incredibly well.

At 3.5m (11-1/2 ft) the hose is a little unwieldy when working in a smaller space like a sanding station. When working with the Festool Cleaning Set around the shop, the length is perfect for easy movement with no concern of having to haul the Dust Extractor. The power cable is 5m (16 ft) giving you a ton of range. The hose connection is robust, seals tightly and won’t disconnect when tugged on.

The HEPA filter bag has a 15L (3.96 gal) capacity meaning it’ll be a long time before needing to be emptied, which as we all know is the absolute worst woodworking chore.

My two favourite features of the CT 15 E are the intuitive touch control, which is extremely helpful when working on more delicate pieces, and the ability to plug a power tool into the extractor so you can activate the extractor as soon as you turn on the tool. When you shut off the power tool the extractor runs for a few extra seconds to remove any dust lingering in the tool or hose.

Overall, I love the CT 15 E dust extractor. It’s taken my dust collection to a whole new level – and my furnace and lungs are ever thankful for what it can do.
