A heat gun is a remarkably versatile tool with a wide range of applications in woodworking, construction and beyond. I frequently use one to soften old paint and varnish, making them easier to scrape away. It’s also invaluable for loosening glue or adhesive from surfaces and for heating metal bolts to expand and loosen them. Beyond these tasks, heat guns are commonly used for heating PVC pipes or acrylic sheets to make them pliable for reshaping, shrinking tubing for electrical wiring, thawing frozen pipes and even removing bubbles from poured resin. The potential uses are limited only by imagination.

The Wagner FURNO 550 cordless heat gun is a powerful and portable solution for both workshop and home projects. Its cordless design provides excellent freedom of movement, making it ideal for tight spaces or outdoor work where a power outlet might not be available. Despite its portability, the FURNO 550 delivers impressive performance. With a low temperature of 550°F and a high of 1000°F, it can handle a variety of jobs ranging from melting adhesives and stripping paint to more delicate tasks like shrinking plastic wrap.

This heat gun runs on a 2Ah AMPShare battery, offering a runtime of seven minutes on high heat and up to nineteen minutes on the low setting. The kit includes two batteries, effectively doubling the runtime on high to fourteen minutes (and thirty-eight minutes on the low setting). One of the standout features of the AMPShare battery system is its compatibility with 18V batteries from other brands within the AMPShare family, including Bosch, Fein and Wagner. While the runtime may not match corded models, I really like the convenience of cordless operation — it’s especially beneficial when working in areas without access to mains power.

The FURNO 550 comes with two nozzles that expand its functionality. The flare nozzle, which I use almost exclusively, is perfect for distributing heat evenly over a wide area. The curved deflector nozzle is ideal for tasks requiring precision, such as thawing pipes or bending plastic tubing. For even more versatility, Wagner offers an accessory nozzle kit that includes a concentrator nozzle for focused airflow, a glass protector nozzle, and an additional flare nozzle for specialized applications.

This heat gun is designed with the user in mind. I really like the LED display panel — it allows for precise temperature adjustments in ninety-degree increments. There is also a built-in LED work light that illuminates dim areas, making it easier to work in challenging conditions. Additionally, the FURNO 550 heats up rapidly, saving valuable time on job sites or in production settings. Its ergonomic design, complete with a well-balanced handle, reduces fatigue and ensures comfort during extended use.

When using a heat gun, safety is paramount. Always work in a well-ventilated area to avoid inhaling potentially harmful fumes. Avoid pointing the tool at flammable materials and consider wearing eye protection and heat-resistant gloves to minimize the risk of burns.

The Wagner FURNO 550 cordless heat gun is a versatile and reliable tool that combines portability with high performance. Whether you’re a professional tackling demanding projects or a hobbyist exploring creative uses, I think you’ll find that this heat gun offers the flexibility and functionality needed for any use you have in mind. Its innovative design and thoughtful features make it an excellent addition to any workshop.
