‘Veneering’ is the method you use to overlay the surface of one material (referred to as the ‘substrate’, which can be solid wood, MDF or plywood) with a thin layer of wood (referred to as the ‘veneer’, which can be just about any species of wood). The process of adhering the veneer to the substrate is fairly straightforward.

In this book, Steve takes you through the entire veneering process, beginning with an overview of what veneers are, how they’re made and used. He then talks about the gluing strategies for veneering – you’ll be glad to know that the most commonly used wood glue (PVA) is all you need.

In chapter 4 Steve describes the various tools you’ll use- many of which you’ll likley have on hand. Fortunately there are only a few specialty items intrinsic to veneering. He also shows you how to make three useful accessories: a veneer tape dispenser, jointing jig and three-way edge caul.

The remaining chapters present four easy-to-make projects that are great for practicing your newly discovered veneering skills, and one very hand veneering jig – a veneer press. It enables you to press a veneer panel up to about 18″ by 30″.  I made mine a tad larger (21″ by 30″). I use it to make panels for display cabinet doors, drawer fronts, keepsake and jewelry boxes, and the like.

If you’ve been doing veneering for some time then this isn’t the book for you. However, if you’ve always wanted to give veneering a try, then this is the book to read before you start. Highly recommended.
