When selecting a light to medium-duty work boot, comfort, durability, support and functionality should be your primary considerations. Whether you work in construction, maintenance, landscaping, or other sectors where lighter-duty footwear is required, the right pair of boots can make all the difference in your daily comfort and productivity.

Though marketed as hiking boots, I’ve found these new Targhee IV boots perfect for the workshop. They’re some of the most comfortable boots I’ve ever worn—lightweight yet sturdy, with outstanding ankle support and reliable traction on slick concrete floors.

Just as a building’s foundation is essential to its structural integrity, the sole of a boot is crucial for comfort, durability, and safety. KEEN understands this, equipping the Targhee IV with what it calls KEEN.PROTECT —a tough, non-marking KEEN.RUGGED outsole that’s both slip- and abrasion-resistant. Deep treads improve stability and traction, while the sole extends up and over the toe, adding extra abrasion resistance. A reinforced toe bumper enhances durability by shielding the front of the boot from wear, prolonging its lifespan.

The exterior of the boot is just as thoughtfully designed. The Targhee IV’s upper is made from abrasion-resistant materials, built to withstand harsh conditions.

At the core of KEEN’s construction is KEEN.FUSION, a unique bonding technology that fuses the sole to the upper without using adhesives. This glue-free process results in a lighter, more durable boot that minimizes the risk of delamination—a common cause of shoe breakdown.

For weather protection, these boots feature KEEN.DRY, a waterproof, breathable membrane that keeps feet dry by allowing internal moisture to escape while blocking out external water from rain or puddles. Unlike many waterproofing treatments, KEEN.DRY is PFAS-free, meaning it doesn’t rely on harmful chemicals that persist in the environment.

Comfort is also a priority. The midsole is crucial for cushioning and flexibility, absorbing impact as you walk. KEEN’s LuftCell technology features an air-injected midsole filled with tiny air bubbles, providing superior comfort and shock absorption while keeping the shoe lightweight. This cushioning resists compression over time, ensuring consistent support throughout the boot’s lifespan and reducing foot fatigue during long wear.

The Targhee IV’s lacing system is efficient and thoughtfully designed, featuring five pairs of webbed eyelets and a final pair of hooked eyelets at the top. The hooks make it easy to slip the laces in and out, allowing you to quickly loosen the boot for easy on-and-off. The braided nylon laces are flexible and easy to tie.

A unique heel strap connects to the lacing system, applying gentle pressure around the heel as you lace up. This design reduces friction, helping prevent blisters during long treks. Additionally, the back collar of the boot slopes downward, preventing discomfort around the Achilles tendon.

Inside, the removable and replaceable insole also features LuftCell technology. In practice, these boots deliver all-day comfort with excellent arch support and a roomy toe box that allows for natural movement—even with thick socks. The fit is snug but never cramped, and each boot weighs just 23 ounces, making them surprisingly lightweight.

After a month of daily wear in the shop, these boots have proven to be comfortable from day one. They’re ideal for spring to fall, whether you’re on a job site, working around the homestead, or heading out for a weekend hike. Plus, their stylish look makes them versatile enough for casual outings. With great value at a competitive price and a lifetime delamination-free guarantee, the Targhee IV is a solid choice for anyone looking for durable, comfortable, and eco-conscious footwear.
