A high filtration efficiency, user-friendly features and seamless integration with Festool’s broader system makes it an excellent choice for anyone seeking an advanced, highly portable air filtration solution.
An air filtration system is strongly recommended for woodworking shops of any size. Even if you use a shop vac or dust extractor with your tools, fine airborne dust particles (especially from sanding and sawing) stay suspended in the air for hours. These very small particles (under 1 micron) can cause long-term respiratory issues, including asthma, allergies and even more serious lung diseases.
An air filtration unit captures the fine dust that your dust collection at the source misses. This makes your shop cleaner and healthier not just while working, but even afterward — less dust settles on everything. Cleaner air means less dust buildup on your tools, work surfaces, and projects, saving you time on cleaning, especially when it comes time to applying finishes. Just as important, if your shop is in a shared space like a garage or basement, an air filtration system helps keep dust from migrating into the rest of your home.
Protecting your lungs is a major priority. Even if woodworking is “just a hobby,” you’re exposed to cumulative dust over time. Having an air filter is like wearing personal protective equipment — it’s a smart, preventative step.
The newest entry into the line of premium air filtration systems is the two-stage, portable Festool SYS-AIR HEPA air filter. Let’s have a look.

The Festool SYS-AIR is a compact, portable two-stage air filtration system housed in a Systainer format. There are two versions available: the standard SYS-AIR and the SYS-AIR HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air). Both use a preliminary filter (VF-SYS-AIR) that captures the majority of dust particles, protecting the main filter and making replacement easy and cost-effective.
The SYS-AIR uses a specially designed TripleV main filter (HF-SYS-AIR M) with an exceptionally large surface area. This design maximizes filtration performance, reduces clogging, and extends filter life. The “M” designation indicates that the filter meets dust class M standards, making it suitable for capturing medium-risk dust from wood and sheet goods, with a maximum permeability of 0.1%.
The SYS-AIR HEPA version uses a TripleV HEPA-rated main filter (HF-SYS-AIR H/HEPA). The “H/HEPA” designation means it meets the HEPA standard, capturing at least 99.97% of particles 0.3 micrometers and larger. This filter is designed to remove very fine and hazardous dust particles.
All other specifications for the two models, including filter surface area, are identical. The key difference is air flow volume: the SYS-AIR delivers a maximum of 423 CFM, while the SYS-AIR HEPA tops out at 265 CFM. Both models provide over 99.9% filtration efficiency, making them suitable for handling hazardous dust classes. It may seem at first that there’s no practical difference between the standard and the HEPA models. However, the key benefits of the HEPA-certified model come down to certification, compliance and traceability, not just raw filtration performance.
Notable features include a filter status indicator light (which turns red when the filter needs replacement), easy, tool-free filter changes, and a design that disperses filtered air upwards in three directions to minimize dust disturbance.
Weighing just under 20 pounds, the SYS-AIR is easy to move around the workshop and small enough that it doesn’t consume valuable space. It can also be mounted atop a Festool dust extractor. Contractors and tradespeople will appreciate that it integrates seamlessly into Festool’s Systainer Systems vehicle racking solutions.
Choosing the right model depends on your application and the level of dust protection you require. For most hobbyist woodworkers, the standard SYS-AIR model is an excellent choice. However, if you work with materials that generate fine or hazardous dust — especially on job sites — the HEPA model is the better option.
Performance Review:
In a word, flawless.
I’ve been using the SYS-AIR in my 280-square-foot (2,100-cubic-foot) shop for over a month, and it has made a noticeable difference in air quality — both the air I breathe and the amount of fine dust settling on surfaces. I run it in tandem with my dust extractor, typically leaving it on for about 30 minutes after sanding, routing or other activities that generate a lot of finer dust. Before I apply any finishes I run the SYS-AIR again to ensure the shop is free of fine dust-laden air.
Noise levels are very manageable: on the Eco setting, I measured it at 61.2 dB, and at maximum speed, it increased to an average of 68.4 dB — no louder than other power tools in the shop.
I also used the SYS-AIR during a project removing a sliding door from a 75-square-foot (600-cubic-foot) sunroom. Part of the job involved using an angle grinder to cut the flange through a 1-inch-thick layer of stucco. Within 10 minutes, the room filled with a thick fog of fine cement dust. The SYS-AIR completely cleared the air in just under 15 minutes to the point where we could safely remove our respirators, proving invaluable for indoor demolition work.
In summary, the Festool SYS-AIR stands out for its high filtration efficiency, user-friendly features, and seamless integration with Festool’s broader system—making it an excellent choice for anyone seeking an advanced, highly portable air filtration solution.
