Maple leaf bowl

Canadian Woodworking

Art Betke, of Prince George, BC, made this pierce-carved, maple leaf bowl.

Betke designed the piece himself, but drew inspiration from fellow Canadian turner Brian McEvoy (onegoodturn.ca). “After the leaves are all pierced,” said Betke, “you start cutting away the wood around them. It’s rather delicate work because the more supporting wood that’s cut away, the more fragile it becomes.”

He figures he spent between 10 and 20 hours on this delicate piece. You can see more of his work at whimsicalwoodturnings.com.
