What type of finish for Purpleheart?
You asked
Seeking advice. Wanting to finish a 10’ piece of heart wood to top a half wall in main entrance. We want to maximize the purple colour over the upcoming years. What brand and type- water based or oil based?.

Our expert answers
Hi Bill. I assume you are referring to ‘purpleheart’. Purpleheart naturally darkens over time, to a dark purple colour. To retain the brighter purple colour longer keep the piece out of direct sunlight – UV rays are purpleheart’s enemy. I’d use a water-based lacquer or water-base polyurethane. Any leading brand will do – brands I’ve used include General Finishes, Livos and Sherwin-Williams. Good luck on your finishing.
