Does Lysol prevent mould?

You asked

When drying wood is a spray type disinfectant, such as Lysol, recommended to prevent mould, especially when the wood is wrapped in paper or stored in wood shavings?

Our expert answers

Lysol might help temporarily by killing mold spores on the surface of the wood, but it’s not a reliable method for preventing mold during the drying process. It only works on the surface, doesn’t penetrate into the wood, and its effects wear off once it evaporates. Plus, the chemical residue can interfere with stains, finishes, or adhesives later on. A better approach is to ensure good air circulation, stack boards with spacers (called stickers) to allow airflow between them, and use a dehumidifier if you’re drying wood indoors. You should also monitor the wood’s moisture content with a moisture meter to avoid drying too quickly and causing cracks. For added protection, some woodworkers use a diluted borax solution (about 1 part borax to 10 parts water), which acts as a mild fungicide without leaving problematic residues.
