TIPS & HOW TO
White oak cabinet
Canadian Woodworking
Ian Ferguson, from Pickering, ON, designed and built this quarter-sawn white oak and wenge cabinet as a class project at Conestoga College.
It’s held together without the use of hardware, fasteners, and with the exception of the doors, without glue. “I designed this piece at a time when I was beginning to explore my Japanese heritage,” explains Ian. “I was heavily inspired by what are called ‘Torii’; the arched gateways that act as entrances to Japanese Shinto shrines and temples.” A newcomer to woodworking, he enjoyed every step of the process, and would love to see others do the same. “Having only been in woodworking for two years, I would love to inspire other inexperienced craftspeople to just go out there and really push themselves. Try new joinery, work with new woods, and really refine your designs.” View the Project Plan
