Storage for batteries
Stephen T.Our expert answers
Here are some tips on how to store Li-ion batteries.
Store them at a partial charge, typically around 40-60%. Storing them fully charged or completely discharged can stress the cells and reduce their lifespan. Many modern batteries have indicators or a “storage mode” on their chargers to help achieve this.
It’s best to keep them in a cool, dry place, away from moisture, with the temperature between 5°C and 20°C. Avoid placing them in direct sunlight, hot storage areas, or (during the winter) in a freezing garage.
You should also remove batteries from tools when not in use for extended periods. Also, it’s probably not a bad idea to unplug batteries from chargers once they are fully charged to prevent overcharging and unnecessary heat generation.
