Michael Walker invented the Linerlock about 4 decades ago, and it revolutionized the knife industry by providing a simple, one-handed operation for securing the blade in place. His folding knife locking mechanism became the foundation for many modern locking mechanisms, influencing designs like the frame lock and compression lock.

His newest everyday carry folding knife, the CRKT Walker Blade Lock, features an intricate and uniquely designed lock mechanism.

The knife has a stainless steel liner inside the handle. When the blade is opened, a bent section of this liner springs inward, locking against the blade. To deploy the blade, you press down and outward on the thumb stud. To close it, you press down on the stud again and flick the blade into the closed position. The movement is very intuitive — I got the hang of it after just a few tries. This is a true one-handed operation, but only for right-handed users. Unfortunately, left-handed users are out of luck.

The handle is nicely tapered and features cross-cut textured G10 scales. G10 is a composite material made by layering fiberglass sheets soaked in epoxy resin, then compressing and curing them under high pressure. The result is an extremely durable material — super strong, wear-resistant, and impervious to environmental factors.

The 1/8-inch thick blade (measured at the spine) is made of 14C28N stainless steel. With approximately 14% chromium content, it offers excellent resistance to rust and staining, making it a reliable choice for both kitchen and outdoor use. One of the standout features of this steel is its fine grain structure, which allows it to take a razor-sharp edge. While not as wear-resistant as high-vanadium steels like S30V or M390, it holds an edge well and is easy to resharpen.

For handling, carrying, and using, the CRKT Walker Blade Lock is a winner — whether in the workshop, around the home, or on a weekend camping trip. It easily tackles a variety of cutting tasks, from opening packages and trimming wood to sharpening pencils and scraping glue. Plus, its unique design makes it a great conversation starter.
