Line trimmers (aka string trimmers or weed whacker) are the tool of choice for trimming grass and weeds in areas that a lawn mower can’t reach. They’re particularly effective along walkways, driveways, flower beds, fence lines, near trees, shrubbery and outdoors structures.

The DG610 is best suited for areas up to about 1 acre in size. It has a 69″ straight shaft with a top-mounted motor that provides excellent balance. It has an adjustable-length shaft and large adjustable ¾ loop D-handle that you can customize to suit your height. I prefer a straight rather than curved shaft rather as it increases your reach – you can cover more ground more quickly. There is a hook up near the head that allows you to attach a shoulder strap.
The 60V battery and brushless motor delivers the trimming power you’d expect to get from a gas model, but without the noise, odor, vibration, weight and time-consuming maintenance. You get about 35 minutes of run time, but you can extend the run-time by using the Eco mode, which I found is great for trimming in delicate areas. The battery takes about one hour to recharge. You can switch out this battery for use in other CAT outdoor cordless power tools, including their blower and mower. The switch trigger, lock-off button and Eco button are easy to access with one-hand. The debris guard is a good size and helps to keep debris off your feet and lower legs.
The DG610 is a bump feed trimmer. It releases line from the spool when you bump the trimmer’s head on the ground. A small piece of metal on the underside of the safety guard cuts the end of the line to the proper length. Installing fresh line on the spool takes a bit of practice, but is reasonably easy.
Overall, the CAT DG610 delivers good cutting power, has decent run time, is easy to handle and is competitively priced.
