This black cherry vase began as a small wrap-around burl with a highly irregular surface.

Initial external turning revealed a large number of bark inclusions, a small ant colony and several vertical cracks including one that extended from top to bottom of the piece. After sanding and finishing the exterior, it was wrapped in plastic shrink wrap and gaffers tape to hold it together. I then carefully hollowed out interior to a final wall thickness of ⅛”. This revealed multiple voids, creating a different visual landscape as the completed form is rotated.
