Strongsville, OH – Northeast Ohio tool manufacturer, Woodpeckers, recently announced their new Ultra-Shear Clearing and Pattern Bits in 1/2″ and 1/4″ shank sizes. The new tools join a similar design with an 8mm shank and a 16mm cutting diameter. All three have a pattern-following bearing that can be removed if you’re using the bit in a CNC or the Shaper Origin.

Large inlays can be tedious to rout with a 1/2″ or smaller straight bit. These larger diameter bits clear pockets quickly and leave a glue-ready surface on the bottom.

Woodpeckers uses an unconventional approach in building these bits. A solid carbide head is brazed to an economical steel shank. This allows them to offer the sophisticated 3-flute spiral cutting geometry found in solid carbide bits at a price competitive with ordinary carbide-tipped bits.

“It’s a technique common in the metal-working industry,” Woodpeckers President, Richard Hummel explains. “It allows us to produce larger diameter router bits without grinding away $40 or $50 worth of carbide into dust.”

Woodpeckers has focused on the needs of hobbyist woodworkers since 1988 and began manufacturing the majority of their offerings in 1993. The company makes precision layout tools, router tables and lifts, innovative clamping tools, carbide-tipped woodturning tools, carbide router bits and a wide variety of helpful shop products. Their facility houses a vast array of computer-controlled mills and lathes and employs over 100 skilled American workers.
