Turn Up the Heat. It’s Pyrography Time.

I enjoy pyrography, but I’m no expert. Here are a few fun pieces I recently burned, and some work of a true master.

Sticking with my “make it, don't buy it” theme, I made my kids small maple hearts for Valentine’s Day. Also sticking with my last-minute approach to gifts, these little gifts were completed late on February 13. Thankfully, lacquer dries quickly.

I made them a similar heart out of mahogany last year, which is still sitting on both of their dressers. Those hearts had carved edges and old English-style initials on their faces. I wanted these new hearts to be different yet complementary to last year’s version.

Shop Project:

Auxiliary Drill Press Table

Adding an auxiliary table to expand the work surface and accommodate accessories can enhance the functionality of the drill press and make life in the shop more enjoyable.

This auxiliary table is made primarily from inexpensive medium-density fibreboard (MDF), clad with a durable layer of plastic laminate, although plywood is also a good option.

The table features disposable wood inserts that can be popped out and replaced when they become too riddled with holes. It also has an adjustable fence system that can accommodate a multitude of useful accessories, such as fence stops and hold-down clamps. After building this handy add-on for your drill press, you’re going to wonder how you ever got along without it.

Wood Finishing:

Penetrating Oil Finishes

Ease of application, lack of film build-up, a beautiful satin sheen and no-fuss repair make these finishes ideal for projects that won't be subject to a lot of heavy daily use.

For woodworking projects that don't get a lot of daily wear and tear – picture frames, jewellery boxes, display cabinets, sculptures, turnings, trimwork and the like – penetrating oil finishes can be an excellent choice. They leave the wood looking natural, and do a good job of bringing out the detail in woodgrain. As well, because these finishes don't crack or peel they're great for wooden objects that are in contact with food (such as cutting boards, salad bowls and kitchen utensils) and for toys that end up in children's mouths.

ISOtunes Link Bluetooth Earmuffs

Hearing protection is critical when working with machinery or power tools in a shop, on a job site, or around the home. Wireless earmuff (over-ear) headphones provide superior hearing protection and much better sound than either earbuds, earphones or on-ear headphones. Their only disadvantage is that they're bulkier and weigh more than the other styles of wearable listening devices. Still, for maximum protection, and a great listening experience, they're hard to beat.

The ISOtunes LINK is a dual product - an earmuff that provides protection against harmful noise (it has a 24 dB noise reduction rating) and speaker headphones that provide high-fidelity stereo sound. It comes with a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that delivers up to 14 hours of run-time. For an even longer run-time you can swap out the included battery with 3 AAA batteries and get up to 28 hours of listening pleasure.
