WOODS TO KNOW: Purpleheart
|
If you’re looking to add some colour to your next project, then consider Purpleheart. It ages to a lovely deep purplish brown. There are over 20 species of Purpleheart in the genus Peltogyne, with all of them exhibiting a different shade of purple in the heartwood. The purple colour is the result of extractives the tree deposits in the heartwood as it grows.

Because of its durability and resistance to stress, it’s commonly used for heavy outdoor and marine projects. But, you can also use it for furniture, cabinetry, interior millwork, turning and marquetry. It has a medium to fine texture with a luster that ranges from medium to high; its grain is usually straight but can be wavy or irregular.
