We have a few ‘new-to-Canada’ tools in this month's eNewsletter, including
Festool and SawStop. Be sure to click on the link below to watch
the video of how SawStop shuts off when it comes into contact with fingers!
We also have some ‘cutting edge’ news on the latest player
in the woodworking machinery industry: Steel City Tools. This new manufacturer
has 32 machines in their starting lineup, with more on the way. Machinery
categories include: planers, jointers, shapers, band saws, sanders, lathes and
dust collectors.
Be sure to read about this new company, and find out what products they will be
introducing.
I hope that you have received your August/September issue of Canadian
Woodworking Magazine in the mail by now. We are already getting calls and emails
about the ‘Liar’s Dice Game Box’, so I know many of you have already started
building it. If you enjoy playing party games, this game box is a sure bet.
Enjoy!

Steel City Tools - New Kid on the Block
You may not
have heard of their name yet, but it's more than likely you will over the
coming months. Established by former executives of Delta Machinery, many of
whom are avid woodworkers, Steel City Tool Works
is offering a full spectrum of professional woodworking machinery, including
their new 10” deluxe titanium table saw with industrial fence (model 35630
right tilt and model 35640 left tilt). The table saw’s titanium nitrite
coated tabletop and extension wings go through a “PVD” (Physical Vapor
Deposition) process, providing a new protective surface with a coating
harder than carbide. This Steel City exclusive process provides unsurpassed
wear resistance, eliminating galling, scratching or corrosion and saving
time and money on maintenance. Additional features include a patented
industrial T-square fence system; heavy duty 3hp dual capacitor motor; and a
three-belt drive system. Their precision-machined, widely spaced
cabinet-mounted trunnions are unique to the industry, and are designed to
eliminate vibration and assure proper blade alignment. The Canadian component of the Steel City team consists of James McEntee, General Manager SCTW Canada, and Grant McPhee, Western Canada Sales
Manager. |
| Space Balls to the Rescue
If
you make solid panel doors then you've had to deal with the issue of
accommodating seasonal dimensional changes in the solid wood panel, while
avoiding the annoying 'panel rattle'.
Space Balls
are inserted in
the rail and stile of solid panel wood doors during construction to secure
the solid panel into place. They not only help to eliminate rattle,
but they center the panel in the frame, reducing the chances of panel
cracking as they compress as the panel expands and contracts with seasonal
changes in humidity. Space Balls also are non-bleeding so they won't
interfere with the finish that you apply. Takes about 8 balls per frame, and
they come in 1/4" and 3/16" diameters, and you can order a 200 pack for $18
on-line.

| Max 2.5 Ah 18-Volt Ni-Cad Battery
Ridgid
Tools have announced a new 18-Volt Ni-Cad battery. It's the only NiCad
battery on the market rated at 2.5 amps, and is compatible with all existing
high-performance Ridgid 18-volt tools.
The Max 2.5Ah battery will also be offered this spring
with the upgraded Ridgid X2 18-Volt 4 piece and 5 piece Cordless Combo Kits
and the newly introduced stand alone 1/2" T handle Hammer Drill.
The best part is that these batteries last a lifetime when
you register for Ridgid's Lifetime Service Agreement, which covers parts and
service and batteries for the life of the tools. |
| Festool Now Available in Canada
If
you demand the best in power tools, then acquaint yourself with the
Festool line of professional German
made power tools. These tools have been available for some time in the US,
but you can now get them through
Hafele Canada. We reviewed the ATF55E circular saw in Canadian
Woodworking Magazine (Dec/Jan ‘03,
Issue 21).
That model has bee replaced by the new TS55EQ shown at left. You can view
the complete Festool catalogue online, as well as order
online or over
the phone (800-423-3531). |
| SawStop Now Available in Canada
Unless
you live a life of seclusion you've no doubt heard about the 'worlds safest
table saw', the SawStop, so named
because it stops a spinning saw blade in milliseconds if any of your body
parts - principally your fingers - come near enough to the blade to result
in bodily disfiguration - aka 'a bloody bad cut'. Read all about how it
works here,
and checkout the video section to see the SawStop in action. The SawStop can
be ordered in 3, 5 or 7HP configurations from
Normand. The 3HP model is $3675
(expensive eh, but at about $740 per finger not that bad). |

This new gradient level from
Kapro shows some clever thinking from the manufacturer. On a lot of
construction projects you not only need to find 'level', but one or two degrees
off level. This level has three vials set in the top. One is calibrated at 0º,
and the other two are calibrated at 1º and 2º
respectively. To use it you place the level on the surface and look for the vial
that has the required slope. The body of the Kapro is made from durable,
rust resistant aluminum, and the vials are solid acrylic. The level is
guaranteed to be accurate to within .029º.
There is a convenient slope-to-pitch conversion scale on the level. They are
available in 24" and 48" lengths. For construction, plumbing, tiling and
concrete work, these gradient levels are definitely worth considering. |
